For PreK-6th Grade: Tri-Cities Opera Opera invites you to the farm, where most of the animals like things to be ‘normal and pretty’–not noisy or different! When the new ducklings hatch, there is one ‘ugly duckling’ who doesn’t fit in with the others and spends her days reading by herself. But when a big, bad wolf comes on the scene, it will take someone like the ugly duckling–who has learned about big, bad wolves in her stories–to outwit him and teach the whole farm about the value of being true to yourself. Named as a nod to Binghamton’s famous carousels, Opera-Go-Round has been delivering the excitement of a fully-staged children’s opera to schools throughout New York State and northern Pennsylvania for nearly 50 years. Students engage with our singers and pianist to explore this unique art form with stories connected to curriculum standards and take away valuable social-emotional learning lessons. The program includes a 35-minute performance and 15-minute question and answer session with the Opera-Go-Round team. Dates are available from late September 2024 through May 2025. Our seven educational play zones offer hands-on exhibits that tell the unique story of Buffalo and what makes us proud to be from Western New York. The zones reveal stories of our region’s history, geography, culture, agriculture, architecture, athletics, commerce and innovation through exhibits that celebrate the power and benefits of play. Explore & More is the perfect place to learn about the region’s past roots with child-led and family friendly play that helps develop the whole child. Perry Ground is a Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. Perry is a Master Storyteller and Cultural Educator who has shared his stories for over 25 years. He enjoys working with students of all ages to teach about the history & culture of Native Peoples. The Storyteller will bring the stories to life through vivid descriptions, his rhythmic voice, and a VERY active stage presence. These stories become ‘interactive’ as Perry is known to include audience members in the stories. His Storytelling and Cultural Enrichment programs include cultural and historical information that meets the expectations of the NYS ELA and Social Studies Curriculum. Talking Turtle Stories offers a wide range of programs for students of all ages. Three different Storytelling programs include stories from the Haudenosaunee (NY) or from across North America. The Cultural Encounter sessions are curriculum-based presentations and/or hands-on workshops that give deeper insight into the history and culture of the Haudenosaunee. A comprehensive year-long classroom program designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to learn music composition, create original compositions, form music groups, bands, or ensembles, and to promote their work on local and national stage. Through a combination of instrumental training, music theory, composition techniques, and industry tools, students will embark on a journey from individual musicians to collaborative creators, culminating in the production of their original work and how to bring their efforts to market.

Our 1-hour videoconference sessions incorporate live animal observations (whenever possible) and current research projects happening right here at the Alaska SeaLife Center. Lime Hollow’s field trips offer standards-aligned, hands-on opportunities for students throughout Central NY to connect with the nature world and the concept they are learning in school. Field trips are inter-disciplinary and align with standards across curriculum including science, math, language arts, social studies, and social emotional learning. Each field trip is led by trained environmental educators with the support of the participating school’s teachers and volunteers.

Social Studies Songwriting Assembly with Mr. Nicky (Virtual Program) Mr. Nicky is an accomplished songwriter and certified teacher bringing a fresh approach to teaching social studies by creating parody songs. His YouTube channel (Mr. Nicky’s World History Songs) has gained over 20 million views and 130,000 subscribers by helping students recall and review their lessons on ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Mr. Nicky’s virtual assemblies (via Zoom/Google Meet/etc.) meet state learning standards in both social studies and ELA. The students write a history song together throughout the course of the hour as Mr. Nicky keeps the time fun and interactive by singing his hits, showing how he creates his channel, taking questions and having a blast celebrating ancient civilizations!

We offer a broad array of experiences to visitors through a variety of methods to encourage understanding and appreciation of the multifaceted story of a pioneer family in WNY. We strive to develop a ‘hands-on’ experience for visitors. From this site, the only fully restored stone dwelling of the early 1800's in Erie county, 200 years of history can be told through the Hull family – the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 & the burning of Buffalo, the opening and impact of the Erie Canal, early pioneer life, the Abolitionist movement, and much more on into the 20th century. Learn about the rich history of the Hull family and their role in shaping the local community! Student field trips to the Hull Family Home & Farmstead are being scheduled from May through October. Currently, we offer interactive lessons which align with the New York State Social Studies Framework for Grades 4 and 7, but we can also work with you to develop a trip tailored to your specific needs and interests.

We offer an indoor/outdoor museum experience crafted to align with NY history and social studies standards by exploring the relationship of this early transportation system to geography, history, economics, government, westward movement, and industrialization. For instance, 4th graders will leave with an understanding of: 4.1 Geography of New York State & Maps—Why the route chosen for canal? What mountain range was in the way?; 4.3d American Revolution—It was the War of 1812 that created an energy crisis in the United States when England cut off our supply of coal; 4.5c Civil War—The canal brought coal to power the Union Navy ships. Tanning leather into soldiers’ boots meant increased business/traffic on the canal. The canal was a major contributor to the Union effort. And much more! Group visits are offered Tuesday-Thursday when the museum isn’t open to the public We can accommodate groups up to 40. Depending on the time of year we can accommodate larger groups by dividing them between our galleries and the grounds outside. WORKING LOCK MODEL: students can open and close the lock gates and release or add water to the lock to see technology in action - how else to get barges up and down steep inclines? WEATHER PERMITTING:? 5-LOCKS WALK: Enjoy a shaded walk outdoors on the towpath past five carved stone locks built as part of the 1850 expansion. Illustrated interpretive signs greet towpath users along the way. LUNCH: A flat grassy area next to the quay is available for a picnic lunch schools bring with them. Students may sit on reclaimed snubbing posts, once used to secure barges. CAPTAIN SAYS! Elementary grades love an active game of “Captain Says” which teaches canal terminology. Using humor to engage audiences, these stories and insights elicit a cascade of emotions that help children and teens find the courage to accept and navigate life's challenges, igniting a spark of hope and optimism that leads to confidence and achievement. Each program culminates in a powerful documentary video, including skydiving, scuba diving, my artwork, and other creative expressions. Together, this represents a journey centered around an important life philosophy: "Yes I Can!" Those three words are precisely the name of my new book. I created this published resource to help teens, parents, and other special needs kids overcome self-doubt and anxiety when faced with bullying or prejudice. Each chapter is filled with stories that highlight principles such as self-love, positive attitude, support group, perseverance, resilience, and empathy.
